With 24 years on the bench, Judge Matia has handled thousands of cases and hundreds of trials on Ohio’s busiest bench.

As founder of Cuyahoga County’s first felony drug court in 2008, Matia continues to put the community first. Over 1,000 lives have been improved by drug court.

Campaigns are expensive

Even unopposed candidates have to contribute thousands of dollars to their party’s reelection efforts. Additionally, judges are only allowed to solicit funds once every six years during their election cycles.

Matia received the President’s Award from the Ohio Common Pleas Judges Association in 2018 and was voted Jurist of the Year in 2021 by the Ohio Association for Justice. His work has gained the recognition of his peers and the lawyers who appear before him.

Drug Court is a second full-time job. Judge Matia has been running a drug court since 2008. The only compensation a judge receives from running a specialized docket is knowing that they are changing futures. It is a lot of extra work.
